AgeDEFY Yoga — Bridge Pose

Online Yoga Class for Hip Pain and Low Back Pain

Bridge pose is one of the many traditional yoga poses to avoid after having a hip replacement. This pose, amongst many others, is why I decided to quit yoga six years ago after finding out I needed both of my hips replaced after teaching yoga for over 15 years of my life.

I was in love with yoga when I found about my hips but, at the time, there wasn’t any yoga teachers talking about hip arthritis and hip replacements in their classes. I felt like a total yoga teacher failure and this is why I quit.

My doctor suggested a new career, but my soul is a teacher’s soul. There isn’t another job in this world that I would rather do than be a movement coach. I decided to quit yoga but I did not quit teaching and coaching.

What I decided to do was to make a career-pivot. I started to work with clients and students who were experiencing pain and stiffness caused by injury or aging and it made me very happy. It was the pivot I needed in the moment to keep teaching and now, looking back, I am so glad I was able to keep going in the career I love so much while experiencing so much pain in my life.

I found my way through my pain by helping others with their pain. I loved teaching yoga in my 20s and 30s but now, at the age of 46, I am more passionate than ever to be teaching movement as medicine for pain and stiffness.

If I had to do it all over again, I would not have quit yoga. I had to drop the yoga teacher title because my yoga students, at the time, were confused why I couldn’t keep teaching the yoga they loved. I couldn’t keep teaching something that was hurting me. I had to find a new way to keep moving my broken body and I could not stay on my yoga mat.

Truth be told, I was angry at yoga. I blamed yoga for my hips. But no one really knows why my hips ended up the way they did. I wish I had someone to turn to in the yoga world six years ago when I found out my hips. I feel bad I gave up yoga the way I did but this is also why I am coming back with a new yoga program — AgeDEFY Yoga for People with Hip and Low Back Pain.

I am teaching AgeDEFY Yoga once a month on Facebook live. The monthly AgeDEFY Yoga class will be offered on the second Tuesday of every month on the AgeDEFY Movement Therapy Facebook page.
