You Can Still Do Yoga if You’ve Had Hip Replacements!

Best Yoga Poses for Those with Hip Replacements

I was a yoga teacher and studio owner for 15 years when I found out I needed both of my hips replaced. The doctors suggested I give up yoga and try another career. I didn’t want to quit yoga, but yoga was becoming more and more difficult for me to do. I tried to hang in for as long as I could but after a few months, I decided to stop trying to fix my hips and stop teaching yoga.

I chose to stop teaching yoga so I could study my pain and figure out a new way to live my life with chronic pain. Traditional yoga poses are not ideal for people with arthritic hips. At the time, I had not choice to give up yoga, so I forced myself to learn and create a new movement method for people with hip pain. This is how I created AgeDEFY movement therapy and now, 6 years after quitting yoga, I am back with an AgeDEFY yoga practice for people with hip pain and hip replacements.

My hips were replaced 4 years after finding out I needed surgery. I had my left hip replaced May 2019 and my right hip was replaced January 2020. I was forced to leave yoga because, at the time, there was no one teaching yoga with hip replacements and I did not know how to continue to do the practice as I had done for 15 years.

I had no option but to quit yoga, but now I am back. I have created AgeDEFY yoga for people like me. I want to teach people how to do the poses they say not to do after having hip replacement surgery.

I don’t want people to have to give up yoga because of pain. I want to help people who have hip pain and hip replacements to be able to keep doing the yoga they love and I want to offer AgeDEFY yoga to people with hip pain who have never done yoga. I want to bring movement medicine back to the yoga practice and to help everyone who is in pain to feel better and to live younger!

This is why I am launching a monthly AgeDEFY yoga class on FaceBook live starting December 4, 2020. Go to the AgeDEFY Movement Therapy Facebook page to sign up for the first class.

Learn how to do the yoga poses they say to avoid after hip replacement surgery. We will learn how to do the AgeDEFY yoga poses Eagle, Warrior 1, Airplane, and Bridge pose in December and will continue to add more AgeDEFY yoga poses every month.

AgeDEFY yoga is not just for people with hip replacements. This program is for anyone who has hip pain, bone on bone arthritis, labral tears, and/or bone spurs.

If you have new hips, you will benefit from AgeDEFY yoga. If you’ve been told you need a hip replacement, then begin the AgeDEFY yoga practice as a way to prepare for surgery. If your hips hurt, in general, do AgeDEFY yoga.

The monthly series begins on Facebook live on December 8, 2020. Sign up on the AgeDEFY Movement Therapy Facebook page.

I hope to see you there.
