RAGBRAI 2024: Move Young Live Young Bike Ride Across Iowa

The Story Of How I Survived My First RAGBRAI

My ability to try new things and to say YES to adventure is all thanks to my daily AgeDEFY movement therapy practice. I didn’t ride my bike before RAGBRAI, and I went into the ride depending on my mobility, core strength, spine flexibility, rib cage mobility, and lymphatic health to get me through the miles. I was right. My AgeDEFY training got me up every hill without walking and through every mile of RAGBRAI. I wish I had the appropriate clothing and shoes for a ride like RAGBRAI, but even without the proper gear, I still kicked butt. I finished without injury, and I owe it all to AgeDEFY.

Here’s my story:

I'm back from RAGBRAI feeling happy, healthy, and injury-free! My quadriceps are sore, and my butt bones are bruised, but after riding 449 miles, including completing my first 100-mile Century ride on day 6, I'm feeling good. I’m feeling better than good. I’m feeling AgeDEFY good!

The ride wasn't easy—the hardest thing I have ever done in my 50 years—but hard work is good for me, and doing hard things is good for all of us. We stop challenging ourselves as we age for many reasons, but I'm here to inspire you to start again. We must challenge ourselves with new movement adventures to live young and have fun as we age. I choose to move young daily with the AgeDEFY workouts to be able to do hard things, such as RAGBRAI, to keep me moving and grooving and living life YOUNG!  

We can't help getting older, but we don't have to live old.

If I didn't have the confidence in my body the way I do because of movement therapy, I would not have been able to finish the ride. The ride was brutal. I would ride all day, starting around 7 AM and not returning to camp until after 6 PM daily. I had to set up a tent and sleep on the ground for five of the seven days, go to the bathroom in porta-potties and cornfields, and shower outdoors. I ate whatever food I could find, drank water and Gatorade, and pedaled from town to town across Iowa. There is no stop in me because of AgeDEFY.

My legs were strong enough to pedal up every hill even without using clip-in cycle shoes, my core kept me upright as I cannonballed downhill, and my lymphatic breath work gave me the endurance to complete every mile without breathing hard. I never lost my breath, but I did bruise my butt. That sucked. But lesson learned.

I'm happy I learned how to work the wobble in the AgeDEFY workouts because after doing RAGBRAI, I know if I didn't have the work the wobble concept in my head, I don't think I could have completed every painful mile. Since we practiced what we could not do at the studio in every class by exploring new movement challenges and working on the wobble, it allowed me to adjust in real-time. The AgeDEFY way of practicing what I can't do, working the wobble, and never giving up got me to the end of the ride.
